Vengeful by V. E. Schwab

Victor Vale and Eli Ever. Sydney and Serena Clarke. Great partnerships, now soured on the vine. But Marcella Riggins needs no one. Flush from her brush with death, she’s finally gained the control she s always sought-and will use her newfound power to bring the city of Merit to its knees. She’ll do whatever it takes, collecting her own sidekicks, and leveraging the two most infamous EOs, Victor Vale and Eli Ever, against each other once more. With Marcella’s rise, new enmities create opportunity-and the stage of Merit City will once again be set for a final, terrible reckoning.

I went into Vengeful with some very high expectations because after finishing Vicious a couple of days earlier I fell in love with the characters and the story and was excited to see where the author was going to take us next because I thought there was a lot of potential with this story. I am happy to say that Vengeful is absolutely amazing and defintley worth the read.

The original characters from Vicious are back as well as a new badass character called Marcella. I didn’t think she would live up to Victor and Eli but she is in a league of her own and is one of my favourite characters I have read about this year. Everything about her is so interesting and intriguing its hard not to keep reading every page just to learn something new about her, and with V. E. Schwab’s writing the character of Marcella is absolutely badass.

I am happy to say that all the rewrites and starting again has pulled off because V. E. Schwab has managed to write an amazing story that didn’t feel like it was written just because it could be, it felt original. Sometimes you read sequels that feel as if they are written just to make more money and don’t really offer anything else to the series, but I found Vengeful to be the complete opposite. I thought that the story was engaging, interesting and a whole lot of fun, and it has most definitely made this series one to read.

As with any other V. E. Schwab book the writing is one of the stand out qualities of the book. It is so easy to loose yourself reading because the way she writes carries you off into the world and you never want to leave it behind. I remember reading part of this book solidly for about two hours and I loved every minute of it. I can put into words how amazing her writing is, and it does make it very difficult to read a book straight after finishing one of hers because you know they probably won’t match up to her talent. Even though this was a hefty book it didn’t feel like it when reading because you read page after page and before you know it you are already at the end of the book.

I did find that I got into this book a lot more quickly than I did when I read Vicious. I think this is because we have already been introduced to the world and the characters and it was easy to fall back into place with everything. Also the chapters are exactly the same as they were in Vicious, with different timelines with every alternate chapter. I think is this another reason why I found this book a lot more easy to start with because I was expecting this layout. As I said with this being a six hundred page book it can be a little daunting, but with the pacing and the way the chapters are written you find yourself flying through the pages in no time.

I would most definitely recommend Vengeful to readers who enjoyed Vicious as well as to readers who are wanting some different to read because you will not regret picking up this series. Just like at the end of Vicious there is hope that there will be another book and even though it might mean another five year wait I don’t mind because it gives me the opportunity to re-read this book over and over again.
